When you think of radio and television careers, you automatically think of announcers, reporters and camera operators, but there are many more career opportunities in the electronic media. Academy of Broadcasting graduates also find employment as copywriters, producers, voice-over artists, account reps, promotions co-ordinators, videographers, audio technicians, video editors and production assistants. Skills taught in this program also prepare you for many of the "New Media" applications.

 

Academy of Broadcasting graduates are employed at Power 97, CJOB, Hot 103 and QX 104, Golden West Radio, 92 Citi fm, NCI, APTN, CTV, Citytv, CBC Radio, CKDM, Q104, Star fm, CKLQ, CFAR, CJAR,CHTM and many other stations around Western Canada.

LOVE YOUR CAREER...BE MEDIA, WITH ABC

This program has undergone major revisions to better prepare graduates for the needs of this ever-changing industry: new technology, new computer lab, small classes, new radio station, hands on training, HD equipment. The Academy of Broadcasting is Manitoba's Media College.

Intro to Broadcast Media

This is a course about the industry, new media, media careers and learning the correct terminology to use in the field.  Students learn their way around the radio on-air studio and begin to develop skills as an announcer. 

Broadcast Announcing

Teaches acting and vocal strategies to develop a professional speaking voice and persona for radio and television.  Students complete hands on projects delivering commercials, news and other on-air features. 

Audio Production

Provides students with basic knowledge and skills pertinent to live and recorded radio production.  The course includes units on digital audio editing, special effects, studio console operations and digital and analog field reporting. 

Video Production

Provides students with knowledge and skills pertinent to television production, both in the studio and on location.  This course teaches students the basic principles of camera operation and composition, lighting and sound recording, non-linear editing and visual storytelling. 

Media Production Specialization

Upon completion of the mandatory units in basic audio production and video production, students will be streamed according to preference into an intensive ten-week program offering advanced production techniques in either audio OR video.

Human Relations

Curriculum is designed to promote greater understanding of self and others, through discussions and individual and group projects and activities. 

English Grammar

This is an intensive review of grammar based on the needs of the broadcast industry. 

Broadcast Newswriting and Reporting

Students develop professional writing and reporting skills.  Interview skills, sports and weather are also taught in this course. 

Reporting and Current Affairs

Students develop research strategies to find, evaluate, organize and report on a variety of current events.  This course also details legal guidelines set down for Canadian journalists and the news media. 

Broadcast Copywriting

Students learn to write 30 and 60 second commercials for radio and television.  This course covers hard sell and soft sell approaches to writing.  Students develop a personal portfolio of their commercials. 

Broadcast Sales and Marketing

Reviews the fundamentals of generating advertising revenue for the media.  Students also develop promotions and simulate live remotes. 

Website Development & Interactive Media

Students will get an introduction to website and interactive media, and learn how they relate to the Broadcasting Industry. Students will create personal websites, publish audio and video to blogs, and learn the workings of HTML websites. They will also be taught to monitor and update social networking sites. 

Media Projects

Using skills acquired throughout the program, students will do major projects in the area they have chosen to specialize. 

Job Search Training

Students develop professional resumes and cover letters.  They learn skills to successfully compete in the job interview process. 

Practicum

100-hour media placement program where students work alongside industry professionals and are graded on their abilities.
